Women who do weight-lifting exercise routines may be better off drinking two large glasses of milk than sugar-based energy drinks after workout regimens, a new study shows.

McMaster University researchers in Canada report they found that women who drank two large glasses of milk after weight-lifting exercises gained more muscle and lost more fat than women who drank sugar-based energy drinks.

The finding is published in the June issue of Medicine and Science in Sport and Exercise.

“Resistance training is not a typical choice of exercise for women, but the health benefits of resistance training are enormous,” says Stuart M. Phillips, PhD, professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, in a news release. “It boosts strength, bone, muscular and metabolic health in a way that other types of exercise cannot.”

A previous study involving men showed that they gained muscle mass and lost fat after exercising and drinking milk.

Phillips says he and his research team aren’t sure what causes the result, but more study is being done.

In a three-month period, researchers monitored young women who did not previously perform resistance-training exercises. Two hours before exercising each day, the women weren’t allowed to eat and were only allowed to drink water.

But after their routines, one group drank 500 milliliters, or about 17 ounces, of fat-free white milk. The comparison group drank a substance that looked similar, but was actually a sugar-based energy drink. An hour after exercising, the same drinks were drunk.

Exercises included three different types: pushing exercises such as bench presses, pulling-down routines such as triceps push-downs; and leg exercises such as leg presses and hamstring curls.

“We expected the gains in muscle mass to be greater, but the size of the fat loss surprised us,” Phillips says in the news release. “We’re still not sure what causes this but we’re investigating that now. It could be the combination of calcium, high-quality protein, and vitamin D may be the key. And conveniently, all of these nutrients are in milk.”

Drinking Milk and Exercise

Phillips says the women who drank milk barely gained any weight, because what they gained in lean muscle balanced out with the loss of fat. Thus, it seems that “simple things like regular weightlifting exercise and milk consumption work to substantially improve women’s body composition and health.”

The participants were not accepted for the study if they had participated in any resistance training for the eight-month period prior to the study. However, the women were aerobically active. The researchers also excluded women who had consumed any dietary supplements, such as vitamins or minerals, in the previous eight months. Five women in each group were taking oral contraceptives.

All of them were told to maintain their usual dietary patterns. Twice during the 12 weeks the women were summoned to the laboratory for a routine fasting blood sample, all of which were analyzed.

All the young women were of similar height, age, and weight; compliance with the regimen was deemed excellent — as were the results.

Women drinking milk and exercising lost fat mass, while gaining lean mass and strength. Body mass increased in the control group, however.

Upper-body strength gains were particularly noted. The researchers speculate a reason for greater strength gains may reflect “a greater potential for change in women because of their lower initial upper-body strength.”

Vitamin D consumption also appeared to be a factor, according to the researchers. While more research is needed, the researchers write that drinking milk seems to be good for women undergoing resistance-strength training, possibly strengthening their bones.

Holiday weight gain seems guaranteed, but the fact is, the holiday season doesn’t mean your scale will become your worst enemy! Here are some easy ways to prevent holiday weight gain.

1. Practice Portion Control

If I have one mantra for the holiday season, it would have to be: All things in moderation. Keep your serving sizes in check at all times and you really can enjoy your favorite holiday treats without gaining weight.

2. Take a Walk

Stay active during the holidays and those extra pounds won’t creep up on you. A 30-minute brisk walk most days of the week can do wonders for maintaining your waistline. Get outside if the weather permits or hit the mall before it opens for a workout while window-shopping.

3. Plan Smarter Meals

Try some new ways to make your holiday meals healthier. Small changes can add up to a big difference. This can be as simple as serving steamed vegetables instead of casseroles or removing skin from the turkey. Just choosing fruit instead of a desserts can save hundreds of calories.

4. Cope with Cravings

Food cravings are a part of life, but they can be especially daunting during the holidays. You seem to smell or see tempting food nearly everywhere you go. If you can’t avoid food cravings, the best way to fight back is to be prepared with a plan for an alternative activity to eating.

5. Don’t Give Up!

The worst thing you can do when it comes to weight management during the holidays? Give into all-or-nothing thinking and keep making bad choices once you’ve made a mistake or two. Never throw in the towel just because of a few slip-ups!

Can vinegar really help you lose weight? A recent study on mice gave hope to the idea that the acetic acid in vinegar may help trigger fat-burning genes. But until the effects are reproduced in humans, vinegar cannot be considered a weight loss aid.

Apple cider vinegar has long been touted as being good for weight loss, and several apple cider vinegar diets have circulated over the years. The acidic vinegar, along with the fruit pectin from the fermented apples, is supposed to have fat-burning effects.

In the mouse study, researchers gave either acetic acid (the main chemical in vinegar) or water to mice via a stomach tube. All the mice were fed the same diet. The researchers found that the mice that got the vinegar compound developed up to 10% less body fat than the other mice, although the amount of food they ate was not affected. It’s thought that acetic acid might turn on genes that produce proteins that help the body break down fats.

But this study cannot be considered conclusive evidence that vinegar is effective for weight loss. More and larger studies are needed before we can know for sure whether vinegar has any fat-burning benefits.

There’s also no proof that taking a few teaspoons of vinegar before meals can curb your appetite or reduce cravings, as many cider vinegar diets claim. A few studies have shown that vinegar may have some impact on how quickly a meal affects blood sugar levels, but body weight was not affected.

The bottom line? Anyone losing weight on a cider vinegar diet is doing so because they are eating fewer calories, not because they’re ingesting vinegar.

With only 3 calories per tablespoon, vinegar is a healthy, low-calorie way to add flavor to any diet plan. But taken alone as a daily tonic, it can be risky. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic, and may cause irritation to your throat and stomach, and even damage tooth enamel. (It should always be diluted with water or juice before you swallow it.) It also has the potential to interact with certain drugs, so be sure to check with your doctor before taking regular doses or supplements of cider vinegar.

Despite the sensational claims made for vinegar diets and other fad diets, there are no quick fixes to weight loss. Experts recommend losing weight slowly, at a rate of 1-2 pounds per week, for lasting results.

If you want to lose weight with vinegar, try eating more vegetable salads and topping them with a dressing that uses less oil and more vinegar. This will shave calories and encourage consumption of high-in-fiber, satisfying veggies.

Acid reflux can be caused by a number of things and is not easy to tackle

It occurs when the valve between the stomach and oesophagus (the gullet) weakens, allowing acid to creep up.

This causes pain, discomfort and a horrible bitter taste in the mouth, all of which, as you know, can start making life a real misery.

Acid reflux is not easy to tackle, but obviously it’s important to look at your food choices. You’re right to stick to white meat and fish, though a little oily fish and/or red meat may well be fine.

There’s no physiological reason why the body can’t digest lean red meat as well as it does white meat, but for some reason some people find it aggravates reflux.

Certain foods increase acid production, so it makes sense to avoid these. They include spicy and fatty foods – creamy sauces, buttery pastries and too much olive oil.

Fruits and vegetables can be troublesome, especially citrus fruits, berries and under-ripe fruit, so watch these.

You might be better off with apples and pears (nicely ripe ones). Cooked fruit may suit your gut more. But try to avoid having any fruit on an empty stomach.

Rice and pasta should be soothing. But it’s worth experimenting to see if any types of bread suit you better than others.

Of course, everyone quite rightly extols the virtues of wholemeal bread for its fibre, B vitamins and so on, but not only can the fibre be a little harsh on an already sensitive gut, it’s also more filling than white bread, which means you eat less generally.

As people with acid reflux sometimes need to put on a little weight or, at least, don’t need to lose any more, you might be better off with white bread.

Sometimes rye or a sour-dough sits better. Try a range of breads, keep a note and see how your gut reacts.

Drink-wise, I would try to avoid having much just before and during mealtimes, as this fills you up and makes it more likely that food will repeat on you.

I’d also watch your caffeine intake – coffee, tea and cola – and chocolate, which contains theobromine, a milder form of caffeine.

All of these can cause the valve at the top of the stomach to relax and make the meal repeat.

It might be worth giving up caffeine to see how you fare. Watch fizzy drinks, too – see the question that follows about fizzy water.

Keep herbal teas on the weaker side as, surprisingly, strong herbs, even mint, can also increase acid secretion (though a weak warm mug of mint tea is good for soothing a fierce stomach).

While these are useful, general suggestions, I should point out there are no hard and fast rules for acid reflux.

Recent research has shown that the “classic” triggers – spicy food and caffeine – may not be a problem for many people with acid reflux.

As well as food choices, one thing that can make a big difference is looking at how you eat.

Eating too quickly means you’re likely to swallow larger pieces of food that sit uncomfortably in the stomach as it struggles to break them down.

You may also swallow a lot of air, so when you burp (which happens more often if you have a tendency towards reflux or heartburn), the forcing up of air can bring acid with it.

So, slow down, chew thoroughly and ideally give your body a good 45 minutes in an upright position after you’ve eaten.

Meals which are fluid-like, for example the porridge and soup you’re having, can also have a tendency to swish up from the stomach.

For breakfast, you might be better with wholegrain toast or a smaller portion of porridge and some toast.

You should definitely have something dry at lunchtime with your soup.

Eat smaller meals, more often – you’ll have less food in your stomach in one go, which can make it more comfortable.

Make sure that your meals and snacks are nutritious – don’t get into the habit of constantly nibbling, and not having a balanced meal.

You might feel that always having something in your stomach helps soak up the acid, but the result is a poor appetite at mealtimes.

Maybe you’ve been struggling — without success — to get down to the size you were in high school or on your wedding day. But do you really need to go that low? The truth, experts say, is that you can weigh more than your ideal weight and still be healthy (not to mention happy).

If you’re overweight, losing just 10% of your body weight is associated with a myriad of health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and blood sugar, and reducing your risk for heart disease. Not only that, experts say, but this kind of weight loss is easier to attain and maintain, setting you up for success in the long run.
Your Weight “Set Point”

Just as your body temperature is programmed to stay around 98.6 degrees, your body weight is naturally regulated to stay within a range of 10%-20%, says Thomas Wadden, PhD, director of the Center for Weight and Eating Disorders at University of Pennsylvania Medical School. This weight range is known as the “set point.”

A complex set of hormones, chemicals, and hunger signals help your body naturally maintain your weight within this range, says American Dietetic Association spokeswoman Dawn Jackson Blatner, RD.

It is not just a matter of genetics, though. Your eating and exercise habits can also help to determine your set point.

“Overeating swamps the internal regulatory system, and, as a result, the set point increases — which is much easier to do than it is to lower it,” says Wadden. The body adjusts to the higher weight and “resets” the set point to defend the new weight.

It is difficult, but not impossible, to set your range lower. “With changes in healthy eating and exercise behavior, you can lower your set point,” says Blatner.
The 10% Solution to Weight Loss

A recent book, Break Through Your Set Point: How to Finally Lose the Weight You Want and Keep It Off, by George Blackburn, MD, suggests that maintaining a 10% loss for six months to a year helps your body adjust to the lower weight and thus reset the set point.

Wadden explains that when you lose large amounts of weight at once, you set up an internal struggle and hormones like ghrelin spike to make you hungrier as your body tries to defend its comfortable range.

Instead, experts recommend that you try losing 10% the old-fashioned way — by slowly changing eating and exercise behaviors — then maintain this new weight for a few months before trying to lose more. Not only will your body get the signal to lower its “set point,” but you’ll give yourself a chance to get used to new food choices, smaller portions, and regular exercise.

“When patients lose 10% it may not be the pant size they want, but they start to realize how a little weight loss impacts their health in very positive ways,” says Blatner. “They feel better, sleep better, have more energy or less joint pain, and some people are able to reduce medications.”

Are you down on confidence as your teeth is pale and stained? There is a simple solution to your entire dental problem. The teeth stains can be got rid by simply applying peroxide compounds like Premium White Pro . The more you use it the better it is for the teeth.

We cannot treat the teeth easily. The dental sessions are not easy and cheap, they are quite expensive. These dental sessions may cost you about $300 per session. The dental whitening is not under insurance cover, so you have to pay from your pocket. It is always a better option to search for an at- home teeth whitening product.

Then you can opt for the one which is cheap. But again there are many which are cheap but not effective. You can opt for the products which have natural ingredients or peroxide compounds.

The compound which can be very effective is Premium White Pro. Premium White Pro can bring those teeth up for you so don’t have to worry about how you’ll pay for an expensive dental visit. In fact, Premium White Pro is formulated from the very same whitening agent that is used by dentists all the time.

It’s easy to use without all those messy trays or sticky strips. You simply apply it twice a day after brushing and flossing and rinse it out after a minute or so. You can bring your teeth up several shades of white, but for a more natural effect it is recommended that you don’t bring them up any whiter than the whites of your eyes. Premium White Pro saves you hours at the dentist, so use that time to go on those interviews. Now you can check the reactions of your colleagues. And pass a smile when they are mesmerized by the look of your teeth.

If you are confident in yourself it is easier for those employers to believe in you. Premium White Pro gave you back your smile so now use it!!

Let’s talk about sugar. There has been a lot of talk, studies and literature about sugar in the last 20 to 30 years. What is known is that sugar slows down the immune system considerably. Let me explain. Sugar raises your insulin level which inhibits the release of growth hormones and then depresses your immune system. Insulin promotes the storage of fat so when you eat sweets high in sugar content, you are risking rapid weight gain. With elevated insulin and triglyceride levels, you are also increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease. The effects of simple sugars on your overall health increase as your consumption increases.
The root of diseases whether it is the common cold, cardiovascular disease, cancer or osteoporosis is always going to be at the cellular and molecular level. And more often than not, insulin is going to play a very big role in creating that disease.
Sugar consumption has become such a problem in today’s society that it is one of the 3 major causes of degenerative diseases.

There are 4 classes of simple sugars which are harmful to your overall health if consumed excessively and over a prolonged period of time. They are:

1. Sucrose
2. Fructose
3. Honey
4. Malts

Let me start off by explaining the term sucrose. Sucrose is a highly refined sugar that is normally known as table sugar. Sucrose can also be found in sugar cane, sugar beets and maple syrup. Table sugar is a carbohydrate which contains calories and affects your blood glucose level and daily calorie intake. Table sugar or sucrose breaks down into 50% glucose and 50% fructose in your body. Your body metabolizes glucose and fructose differently and can only handle very limited amounts of fructose at one time. Glucose is metabolized in the cells of your body for energy and fructose is metabolized almost entirely in your liver. An example of fructose is corn syrup or fruit sugar which comes from dried fruit and vegetables.

Honey is a natural sweetener and is considered a refined sugar. Honey decays your teeth faster than table sugar and has the highest calorie content of all the sugars, 65 calories/tablespoon compared to 48 calories/tablespoon for table sugar.

Malts are known as maltose or malt sugar. It is a crystalline sugar formed from starch and is found in malt grains and fruit.

Now that you know a little more about simple sugars and its effect on your overall health, you have to decide what you want to do regarding your consumption of these different types of sugars. My only advice is to limit your intake all together especially of fructose and fructose based products. A good rule of thumb to follow is “everything in moderation.”

Sugars: Harmful For Health keep away from any kind of sweetness which contain sugars for Health in Life.
