It has been a well known fact that panic attacks can affect a person quite severely if put forward the prospect of public speaking. Let’s not just push this to one side like it is nothing, public speaking is a big deal for many people and you can find yourself in the depths of a panic attack very quickly if put into a public speech situation.
Public speaking and panic attacks usually occur because when stood in front of a crowd of people you worry about how you are going to come across to these people and also about things going wrong on a huge scale. You start to fear the situation and before you know it that fear starts to hinder your breathing and your thoughts become even more irrational, resulting in a panic attack which can be very severe.
Speaking publicly in front of a crowd is a tough thing to do and not many people can do it without thinking about it. This is why public speaking and panic attacks generally go hand in hand. The real danger of panic or anxiety attacks and public speeches isn’t necessarily the fact it could happen again in the next public speech you may have to do. The danger is that your panic could in fact turn into a disorder and with it, regular more frequent panic or anxiety attacks within your life.
Many people can laugh about it and feel light hearted about a public speaking and panic attacks situation but in truth, some people go on to suffer from panic or anxiety attacks and after effects for years. Many panic attacks occur when a public speech is over prepared, the more a speech is prepared and thought about, the more fears drive into your thoughts. So, as a rule of thumb, if you have a public speaking event coming up, or have experienced panic attacks while public speaking, then it is definitely a good idea to look at how you are preparing your speeches.
Take time to prepare, don’t leave it until last minute and then you won’t have to keep going over your speech in your mind again and again which will work your stress levels up. You have the opportunity to prepare earlier and properly, to learn your speech without worrying. This way you stand a better chance of speaking in public without panic attacks occuring.
However, this isn’t the case for each and every person and sometimes you just cannot prepare for it. Treating your panic and anxiety attacks as a whole will help though, and if you do suffer from panic attacks when public speaking it may be a very good idea to look at how you can treat them in the long run!
