industry today, many people are left feeling just plain confused about how to effectively reduce belly fat.</p>
<p>The first thing you must know about how to effectively reduce belly fat is that there is no magic bullet when it comes to weight loss. Reducing body fat levels requires a three pronged approach that doesn&#8217;t come from popping diet pills or gulping down foul tasting drinks. If you don&#8217;t enjoy walking then ride a bike, rollerskate, jog, run. Participate in whatever aerobic activity you enjoy.</p>

<p>Even though I know you’re within the healthy limits for alcohol, you may notice a difference if you halved your intake. One unit of alcohol means a very small pub measure of wine; the wineglasses we use at home are more like two units (the same applies in restaurants), and I wonder whether that means that your alcohol and calorie consumption is higher than you realise. Alcohol can give us an increased appetite (especially on an empty stomach), so it may be that if you cut down, you will eat less. I find that desperate as I am most nights for a glass of wine, I notice a huge difference in my energy level if I don’t drink during the week. I miss it, but the compensation is not in feeling so exhausted.</p>
<p>You may not be eating enough iron-rich foods, ie, lean red meat, green leafy vegetables, pulses and beans. Look for the seasonal iron-rich vegetables such as curly kale and cavolo nero that are in the shops — these are delicious steamed. If you’re low in iron, you may be anaemic, and it would be worth asking a GP for a blood test. I find that increasing my intake of lean protein (lean red meat, chicken, eggs, fish, beans, lentils) and reducing the carbs (bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, cereals) — I don’t cut them out totally, I just have smaller portions and make up the difference with the lean protein — can make me feel more energised.</p>
<p>It’s possible that you’re eating too much cheese; cut the rind off soft cheeses such as brie, as this reduces the fat and hence the calorie content, and maybe use a cheese-slicer instead of cutting big chunks. Also look at the speed you eat — as a new parent, meals becomes more rushed and you could be eating too quickly to accept when you ought to stop, and portion sizes can creep up. A late afternoon snack just before the children’s bath time — say, a quick bowl of soup, or a few slices of prosciutto and a few cherry tomatoes, or a banana — should keep your energy levels high.<br />

<p>The study, in Nutrition &amp; Dietetics published by Wiley-Blackwell, found higher protein meals may have a subtle fat-burning effect in overweight or obese people. And the study showed the glycaemic index (GI) of a meal has no additional effect on fat breakdown.</p>
<p>Study co-author Dr. Marijka Batterman, an Advanced Accredited Practising Dietitian, said: &#8216;We know from past research that overweight or obese people are not as efficient at burning fat. This new study shows that fat oxidation, or the body&#8217;s ability to &#8216;burn&#8217; fat, improves in obese people when they eat a higher protein diet.&#8217;</p>
<p>Study participants were put on two protein-enriched meals and one standard meal, which all contained the same number of kilojoules. The two protein-enriched meals differed in the type of carbohydrate they contained &#8211; either high- or low-GI. The amount of kilojoules subjects burnt was then measured.</p>
<p>The high-protein meals led to the greatest level of fat oxidation. This plan included a cheese and tomato omelette for breakfast, and a beef, chutney and salad sandwich, with a tub of low-fat yoghurt, for lunch.<span id="more-560"></span></p>
<p>&#8220;We found a clear relationship between body composition and the effect of dietary protein on fat oxidation. Our bodies burn energy and use fat differently, and we need to take this into account when planning our diets,&#8217; said Dr. Batterman who works at the Smart Foods Centre at the University of Wollongong.</p>
<p>Claire Hewat, Executive Director of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), said all foods could fit into a healthy diet if eaten in the right amounts, and combined with regular physical activity.</p>
<p>&#8216;Forget the fad diets that are so fashionable these days. Instead, include lean protein from healthy foods like lean red meat, chicken and fish, legumes, eggs, nuts and reduced-fat dairy foods. People wanting individual advice on how much protein they need should see an Accredited Practising Dietitian,&#8217; said Ms Hewat.</p>

However, if you want to get the maximum benefits possible from every minute you invest in your workouts, then you should consider getting up early and doing cardio before you eat your first meal &#8211; even if you’re not a “morning person.” Early morning aerobic exercise on an empty stomach has three major advantages over exercising later in the day:</p>

<p>1.  Get active &#8211; it&#8217;s a sure-fire way to increase the amount of muscle you have, which in turn will speed up your metabolism. Do a mixture of aerobic and resistance training for best results. And don&#8217;t forget to be more active in your daily life too.</p>
<p>2. Eat little and often &#8211; there&#8217;s evidence that eating small, regular meals throughout the day, rather than one or two large meals, may help to keep your metabolism ticking over. Surprisingly, around 10 percent of the calories we use each day go on digesting and absorbing food &#8211; so the more times you eat, the greater this effect is likely to be.</p>
<p>3. Eat plenty of protein-rich foods &#8211; research shows that around 25 percent of calories in a protein-rich meal may be burnt off. But make sure you choose low-fat protein foods such as lean meat, skinless chicken and low-fat dairy products.</p>
<p>4. Spice up meals &#8211; it&#8217;s not an old wives tale after all! Spices like chilli are thought to raise metabolism by up to 50 percent for up to three hours after eating, due to increasing your heart rate. But before putting the local Indian takeaway on speed dial, work out which curries have the lowest calorie and fat content.</p>
<p>5. Swap you daily cuppa for green tea &#8211; there&#8217;s evidence that it contains antioxidants that speed up metabolism.</p>
<p>6. Try a CLA supplement &#8211; more extensive studies need to be carried out before any definite conclusions can be drawn, but research has shown that conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) might increase muscle and therefore boost metabolism.</p>
<p>7. Chill out &#8211; research shows that being very cold can increase metabolism by up to 20 percent.</p>
<p>8. Have a sauna &#8211; being very hot is also thought to boost metabolism by about 20 percent (but check you don&#8217;t have any underlying medical problems that mean you shouldn&#8217;t go in saunas or steam rooms).</p>
